Why Newborns Wake Every 2-3 Hours at Night
It is 3am. Your baby is awake again. You fed them just 2 hours ago. This is the part nobody fully prepares you for. But there is a very good reason your newborn wakes so frequently — and understanding why can make those nights feel a little more bearable.
The Biological Reasons
1. A Tiny Stomach
A newborn's stomach is only the size of a marble on day one, growing to about the size of an egg by the end of the first month. Breast milk and formula are digested quickly — usually within 1.5 to 2 hours. Once empty, your baby is hungry again.
2. Immature Sleep Cycles
Adult sleep cycles last about 90 minutes and are largely deep sleep. Newborn sleep cycles last just 45-50 minutes and contain far more active (light) sleep. At the end of each cycle, they partially wake. Adults put themselves back to sleep without noticing — babies do not have this skill yet.
3. No Melatonin Production
Melatonin is the sleep hormone that helps us feel sleepy at night. Newborns do not produce their own melatonin until around 3 months. Until then, they have no internal clock distinguishing night from day.
4. Growth Requires Calories
In the first 3 months, babies grow faster than at any other point in their lives. This rapid growth demands a high caloric intake — which means frequent feeding, including through the night.
5. Safety Mechanism
Frequent arousal in sleep is actually a protective factor against SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Lighter sleep and easier waking keeps babies safe. It is their survival system at work.
When Do Babies Start Sleeping Longer?
There is no single answer — every baby is different. But here are general milestones:
Age | What to Expect |
0-6 weeks | Wake every 2-3 hours — totally normal |
6-8 weeks | Some babies manage a 3-5 hour first stretch |
3 months | Many achieve a 5-6 hour stretch at some point |
4-6 months | Some babies sleep 6-8 hours (but not all!) |
6+ months | Many babies can be gradually night weaned if ready |
How to Survive Night Waking
What Not to Worry About
Your baby waking every 2-3 hours does NOT mean:
It means your baby is a completely normal, healthy newborn. This phase is hard but it is finite. Most babies improve significantly between 3 and 6 months.
